Upgrades
Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE:ANF), the specialty retailer, was downgraded to a Neutral from Positive at Susquehanna.
Airgas (NYSE:ARG), the distributor of industrial and medical gasses, was upgraded to a Buy from Hold at Soleil.
Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE:ALU) was upgraded to a Hold from Sell at Capstone.
American Water (NYSE:AWK) was upgraded to a Buy from Hold at Citigroup.
Continental Resources (NYSE:CLR) was upgraded to a Buy from Hold at Canaccord Genuity.
Diamond Offshore Drilling (NYSE:DO), the offshore driller, was upgraded to a Strong Buy from Reduce at Duncan-Williams based on valuation. The firm set its target price at $86.75, noting the stock is trading at over a 20% discount to the group on a 2011 P/E basis.
E*TRADE (NASDAQ:ETFC), the online brokerage and financial services provider for individual retail investors, was upgraded to a Buy from Neutral at Goldman Sachs.
Helmerich & Payne (NYSE:HP), the contract driller of oil and gas wells in the Gulf of Mexico and South America, was upgraded to a Strong Buy from Reduce at Duncan-Williams based on valuation. The firm set its target price at $72, noting the company recently missed its fiscal second quarter earnings, which put pressure on the stock as well as the recent pullback in commodity prices.
Infinity Pharmaceutical (NASDAQ:INFI) was upgraded to Overweight from Neutral at Piper Jaffray.
Noble Corp (NYSE:NE), the provider of contract drilling services, was upgraded to a Strong Buy from Reduce at Duncan-Williams based on valuation. The firm set its target price at $54, noting the recent pullback in the space and the pullback in commodities.
Ross Stores (NASDAQ:ROST), the off-price apparel retailer, was upgraded to a Hold from Sell at Citigroup.
Salix Pharmaceutical (NASDAQ:SLXP) was upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at JMP Securities.
Southwest Air (NYSE:LUV) was upgraded to a Buy from Hold at Dahlman Rose. The firm set its target price at $15, as it believes the integration of AirTran Airways into Southwest will add significant revenue potential related to the Atlanta market.
Ultra Petroleum (NYSE:UPL) was upgraded to a Hold from Sell at Canaccord Genuity.
Downgrades
Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE:ALU) was downgraded to a Sell from Hold at Societe Generale.
American Science & Engineering (NASDAQ:ASEI) was downgraded to a Hold from Buy at The Benchmark Company. The firm set its target price at $90 on slowing U.S. Department of Defense and border protection bookings.
Commvault Systems (NASDAQ:CVLT) was downgraded to a Sell from Hold and at Capstone. The firm set its target price at $28.
Mead Johnson Nutrition (NYSE:MJN), the maker of nutritional products for infants, children, and expectant and nursing mothers, was downgraded to a Neutral from Buy at Goldman Sachs.
Obagi Medical (NASDAQ:OMPI) was downgraded to a Hold from Buy at Duncan-Williams. The firm notes Obagi shocked participants on the earnings call with the news that it can no longer ship 4% hydroquinone-based products into Texas. They think the Texas action coupled with the long-known hydroquinone overhang led to a stampede out of the stock and eclipsed the positive legal settlement with ZO SkinHealth.
Savient Pharmaceutical (NASDAQ:SVNT) was downgraded to a Neutral from Buy at Lazard.
Staples (NASDAQ:SPLS) the office products retailer, was downgraded to Reduce from Neutral at Nomura.
TD AmeriTrade (NASDAQ:AMTD), the provider of online brokerage services for independent individual investors, was downgraded to a Neutral from Buy.
Telefonica S.A. (NYSE:TEF) was downgraded to a Hold from Buy at Deutsche Bank.
