Advancers Fortune Brands Inc. (FO 63.97, +2.82, +4.61%) shares were up 5.5% ahead of Wall Street’s open. The Deerfield, Ill., liquor and consumer-products company plans to split into three businesses. Orexigen Therapeutics Inc. (OREX 11.68, +6.81, +139.84%) shares leaped in preopen trade after the biotechnology company garnered the support of an advisory panel to federal regulators for Contrave, its weight-reduction drug candidate. Orexigen rivals also gained, with Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc. (ARNA 1.68, +0.27, +19.15%) shares gaining 11% and Vivus Inc. (VVUS 9.48, +1.68, +21.54%) shares advancing 16%.
Decliners KKR Financial Holdings LLC (KFN 8.97, -0.51, -5.38%) shares fell 6.7% after the specialty finance company announced the sale of 18 million shares to finance acquisitions. Puda Coal Inc.’s (PUDA 13.44, -1.16, -7.95%) U.S.-listed shares declined 13% after the steel-industry supplier announced a public offering of its common stock. Polypore International Inc. (PPO 38.25, -2.74, -6.69%) shares were off 6.7% after the maker of technology used in batteries announced a public offering of 4 million shares of common stock.
